  • State Police Recognize Trooper, Non-Commissioned Officer, PCST and PCO of the Year

          April 7, 2017 (PIKESVILLE, MD) – Maryland State Police Superintendent Colonel William Pallozzi today recognized sworn and civilian employees of the year at barracks and units throughout the Department, which culminated with the announcement of the statewide Trooper, Non-Commissioned Officer, Police Communications Supervisor and Police Communications Operator of the Year for 2016.   The statewide Trooper of the Year award was presented to Trooper Charles Tittle, of the North East Barrack.  The Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year for the Maryland State Police was awarded to Sergeant Jeremy Vogt, of the Criminal Enforcement Division.

  • Trooper Injured In Crash Remains Critical As Investigation Continues

    April 14, 2016 (LANHAM, MD) – The Maryland state trooper injured while working a crash investigation this afternoon on the outer loop of I-95/495 in Prince George’s County remains in critical condition as investigators continue to work to determine what caused a driver to strike several other vehicles before striking the troopers car.   The driver of the car that struck the trooper is identified as Prasad Yadavalli, 60, of Galloway Township, New Jersey.  He was transported by ambulance to Prince George’s Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.

      Dear Friend,   On behalf of the Maryland State Trooper 2 Memorial Committee, I would like to share an important opportunity for Maryland business owners, and individuals. It is the opportunity to thank the first responders who keep Maryland safe, and in particular to thank and honor the two helicopter crew members of Maryland State Trooper 2, and the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department Medical Technician who died serving the Maryland community on September 27th 2008.   A memorial is planned for installation in Walker Mill Park, in Prince George’s County near the crash site, with another smaller marker at the actual crash scene.

      We have recently learned that many individuals who participated in health plans which were discontinued for 2015 failed to select a different plan during the open enrollment period.  Because they failed to select an available plan and submit the open enrollment form, they were recently notified that they would not have any health insurance coverage for 2015.     To address this issue, the Department of Budget and Management has agreed to mail open enrollment packets to those losing health coverage with a second chance to elect coverage.

      BEL AIR _ A fourth-grader who finds solace in reading has teamed up with two Troopers’ Association lodges, the Maryland State Police and UPS to help restock the library shelves of tornado-ravaged schools in Moore, Oklahoma.   Lauren DeCourcey, 8, a student at the Tome School in North East, was moved to action by the images and news following the May 20th EF5 tornado which claimed 23 lives, injured almost 380 others, leveled the Plaza Towers Elementary School and heavily damaged two other schools.    Books are an important part of life for the honor-roll student.

        (CUMBERLAND, MD) – David Cooper descended from a line of sailing ship captains, but while serving on the Coast Guard cutter ACTIVE, he soon discovered he did not inherit a stomach for rough seas. During one mission to save a sinking fishing boat, he watched as a Coast Guard helicopter flew by on its way to deliver pumps, then pass by again on its way home, changing his ship’s mission from rescue to escort. It dawned on Cooper that getting into a helicopter would allow him to do rescue work while spending most of his career ashore.

              The issue of proposed changes to healthcare premiums came up at the last MTA Executive Board meeting.  I checked on the Department of Budget Management website for additional information and found the following two PDF documents which outline considerable changes to PPO and POS healthcare plans for active personnel and retirees which will become effective on July 1, 2012.  It is my understanding that active members currently under bargaining unit 1 (SLEOLA) may be exempted from this change this year because it was not negatiated as part of the existing contract with the State.

The Conference Committee concurred on the following amendments. Healthcare and Prescription Plan For Active and Retired Members the co-pays for prescriptions will be as follows: Generic Drugs: Co-pays go from $5 to $10 Preferred Brand: Co-pays go from $15 to $25 Non-preferred Brand Co-pays go from $25 to $40 For retirees, the out-of-pocket cap will go from $700 to $1500 per year.
